Consultations
A Specialist Respiratory Physician consultation at Canterbury Respiratory Care is a comprehensive assessment of your respiratory health, which may lead to further diagnostic tests if necessary and ultimately, a progressive personalised management plan for your respiratory condition. Please call to make an appointment.
Cutting edge personalised asthma treatment
Canterbury Respiratory Care is specialised in the management of all types and severities of asthma. Have you been treated with steroid tablets (prednisone) for your asthma in the past year? Have you ever been told you have "difficult to treat asthma" or severe asthma? If so, this is definitely the place for you. Assessment will be undertaken by an Oxford-trained asthma specialist to confirm the diagnosis and determine what type of asthma you have. A tailored management plan will then be developed according to what type of asthma you have. In some cases, treatment options may include a targeted injectable biologic medicine, now available fully funded in NZ for severe eosinophilic asthma.
Spirometry and Exhaled Nitric Oxide Testing
At Canterbury Respiratory Care, spirometry and post-bronchodilator reversibility testing can be done during your consultation appointment, eliminating the hassle of you having to have lung function testing done at another facility and avoiding waiting times. If you have asthma, exhaled nitric oxide testing (FeNO) will also be done during your appointment. FeNO is a good biomarker of eosinophilic airway inflammation, present in eosinophilic asthma. These are simple tests to perform and provide very useful information to your Respiratory Specialist to help guide your airways disease management.
Bronchoscopies
A bronchoscopy is a procedure performed by a trained specialist, where a bronchoscope (a thin flexible tube with a light and camera at the end) is passed through the nose or mouth into the lower airways to examine them and take samples such as washings, brushes and biopsies if necessary. Sedative medication is usually given. If a bronchoscopy is advised, your Respiratory Specialist will discuss this fully with you.
